The Institute for Liver and Digestive Diseases (ILDD) at Hallym University was founded in June 2009 and was designated as a Key Research Institute in June 2020. This designation follows an accumulation of achievements in clinical and translational research at our institution. During the past 11 years, the ILDD has been united against relativism and mediocrity that could have inhibited our growth. With the designation as a Key Research Institute of South Korea, the ILDD now passes a milestone for the future.
The current mission of the ILDD is to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic technologies using the intestinal microbiome and their metabolites, which we believe will lead to a paradigm shift in medicine. Many clinical studies since the publication of the Human Microbiome Project in 2007 have demonstrated the association of the intestinal microbiome not only with liver and neuropsychiatric diseases, but also with cancers. Furthermore, evidence of a causal relationship between intestinal microbiota and various diseases are accumulating, and it is highly probable that intestinal microbiota and their metabolites will become available as treatment modalities in the future. In line with this advancement, it is predicted that the conventional viewpoint will shift from viewing non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension as lifestyle-related diseases to understanding them as communicable diseases that are caused by intestinal microbes.
Our most important mission as a Key Research Institute is to cultivate future researchers who specialize in translational medicine. We see collaboration with the world’s leading researchers in intestinal microbiome as essential to accomplishing this goal. To encourage such cooperation and collaboration, our own specialized research must take place first, and to that end, the ILDD is determined to avidly support our graduate students and research scientists in their career development.
Someday, the ILDD will be remembered as an institute where "Amazing things happened.” We warmly invite you to our future.

2009년 6월에 설립된 한림대학교 소화기연구소는 2020년 6월 대학중점연구소로 지정되었습니다. 대학중점연구소 지정은 그동안 선학과 후학이 한마음으로 뭉쳐 상대주의와 평균주의의 함정에 대한 경계를 늦추지 않으며 임상 및 중개연구 실적을 쌓아온 결과입니다. 이제 소화기연구소는 중점연구소 지정을 기점으로 미래를 향한 도약을 시작합니다.
한림대학교 소화기연구소에서 집중하고 있는 “장내 마이크로바이옴을 이용한 진단 및 치료기술 개발”은 앞으로 의학의 패러다임을 바꿀 가능성이 높습니다. 2007년 Human Microbiome Project가 발표된 이후, 간질환뿐 아니라 치매, 알츠하이머병, 자폐증 등 신경정신 질환, 그리고 여러 암과의 연관성에 대한 임상연구가 진행되었고, 이 연관성에서 더 나아가 질환의 원인과 치료방안으로서 장내미생물을 연구하고 있습니다. 2020년 Science에서는 비만, 당뇨병, 고혈압 등 현재 non-communicable disease라 불리우는 질환들이 점차 communicable disease인 것으로 밝혀지고 있으므로 생활습관병에서 장내미생물에 의한 질환으로 패러다임이 변화될 것으로 전망하였습니다.
대학중점연구소는 미래의 중개의과학 전문 연구자를 양성하는 것이 가장 중요한 목표입니다. 이를 위해서는 세계적으로 장내 마이크로바이옴 연구를 선도하는 연구자들과의 협력과 공동연구가 필요합니다. 그리고 이 협력과 공동연구가 활발히 이루어지려면 우리 스스로 특화된 연구를 더 해낼 수 있어야만 합니다. 이 목표를 이루기 위해 소화기연구소는 대학원생, 연구교수들 각자가 자기 발전, 자기 계발의 주도자가 되도록 지원을 아끼지 않을 것입니다.
훗날 “놀라운 일이 여기서 일어났다.”고 얘기할 우리의 미래로 여러분들을 초대합니다.
